Kitty
If you’re getting ready to adopt your first kitty or pet cat and are looking for a word of advice, here’s the best piece of advice anyone could give you: get to know your kitty!Unfortunately, many people decide to become a cat or dog owner without understanding what they are getting in into. They don’t understand the needs or preferences of their kitty or of the feline species in general. This lack of knowledge can have disastrous results for your pet cat or kitty. Many people jump in with both feet without thinking. Before they know it, they are in over their heads. They find themselves stuck with a pet cat or kitty they don’t understand and don’t know how to train. Sadly, this is how many cats end up in shelters or on the streets. Understanding your cat or kitty is the first step to a long, rewarding life together.
Understanding Your Kitty
Lets take a few minutes to discuss a few common cat behaviors and why your adorable pet cat engages in them.
- Your kitty will enjoy playing in his outdoor cat playpen or outdoor cat runs at night, because cats are nocturnal. A number of cats enjoy being outside in the evening time because it is the ideal time to hunt for prey. Even though your domestic cat or kitty has no need to hunt for food, the urge to go outside to stalk a mouse or chase a bird is still there. This is completely normal. So why not indulge your kitten once in a while? Even though you may be ready to go to bed, your kitty or pet cats may need a half an hour in their outdoor cat runs or outdoor cat playpen.
- You may notice that your kitty only eats a very small portion of food at a time and rarely cleans his bowl in one setting. The reason for this is that most cats prefer to eat food in small portions—about the size of a mouse. As a result, it is important that you feed your pet cat frequently or leave food out for him during the day. But be careful! If you allow your pet to eat whenever he wants, you may end up with an obese cat or cats. If you do feed your pet 3 or more meals a day, be sure you are feeding very small portions. This will help your kitty maintain an ideal weight, while still providing adequate nutrition.
Your kitty will love to rub against you as you are sitting on the couch or resting in the bedroom. Cats do this in order to leave their scent on you. Rubbing against you is actually a sign of affection and loyalty, so don’t push your cat away. Instead, allow your kitty or cat to indulge in this behavior, realizing that it is a sign of his devotion to you. And don’t forget to give your kitty a hug!!!
