Cat Furniture

As your cat gets older, he may become more tired, less active and seem lethargic. Some older cats do nothing but lie on their cat furniture in their cat kennels all day long. They seem disinterested in their toys and rarely move about their outdoor cat cage, preferring to soak up the sun and rest. While it is true that cats need an average of 16 hours of sleep each day, this doesn’t mean your cat should do nothing but rest in his outdoor cat enclosures. In order to be a healthy, happy and well-adjusted pet cat, your kitty needs social interaction and exercise. Encourage your pet to get off his cat furniture to play, romp or explore. This may be easier said than done, but you gotta try.

And there is one magic plant that may be the trick—catnip.

Encouraging Your Pet To Get Off The Cat Furniture & Move

Catnip is an herbal plant that is extremely attractive to cats. In fact, as many as 70-90% of cats are attracted to this substance. Most cats will inhale or ingest the plant, which triggers excitement & rambunctious behavior. After being exposed to catnip your pet cat may paw, rub, roll and scamper incessantly. He may kick his hind feet, shake his head and chase anything that moves. While catnip itself is relatively harmless, the effects can be beneficial, especially for a lethargic cat that has no motivation to engage in everyday activities. This plant could be just the thing you need to encourage your pet cat to climb down from his cat furniture or outdoor cat cage and have some fun. Here are a few ways you can use catnip to increase your pet’s spunk or to help solve behavioral issues:

  • Purchase catnip toys.  Many manufacturers produce toys that are scented with catnip. Throw a few of these in your cat kennels or outdoor cat enclosures and watch your pet perk up within a few minutes. He’ll jump off his cat furniture eager to investigate these freshly-scented toys.

  • Rub catnip on your cat furniture, cat scratching posts or cat towers. This will encourage your pet to rub, paw and climb. If you spray catnip on your cat furniture, your pet may enjoy rubbing against his furniture instead of simply laying on it. At least, this would give him some exercise and mental stimulation.

  • Spray catnip on other cats. If your old cat refuses to move from his cat furniture and interact with your new kitty or another cat in the family, spray catnip on both felines. Before long, you may notice these two palling around in their cat kennels or outdoor cat cages. Instead of ignoring one another, they may walk the perimeter of their outdoor cat cage together, groom one another’s fur and even snuggle.

Catnip offers many benefits for the lethargic cat who is bored with life. Give it a try and see how it helps your pet! You may even want to grow a small patch next to your outdoor cat enclosures so your pet can inhale or ingest parts of it whenever he feels like it.
