Unfortunately, sickness and disease is much too common, even under the best of circumstances. One day your pet may be happily basking in his iguana enclosure or iguana terrarium, and the next moment he may be deathly ill. Things happen suddenly. Nothing is worse than waking up one morning to discover that your reptile is lying listlessly in his iguana terrarium or monitor cage.
Keeping Your Pet & Iguana Enclosure Bacteria-Free
While you cannot entirely prevent illness, there are several things you can do to decrease the odds of your pet becoming sick. Here are a few tips:
1. Keep your iguana enclosure sanitary. Feces, dead insects and wet substrate should be removed immediately. Don’t let it pile up inside your iguana enclosures or iguana terrarium. This only allows bacteria to grow and spread.
2. Rinse water bowls daily. Algae and slim will easily build up inside water dishes, especially if your iguana terrarium or monitor cage is as warm as it should be.
3. Clean cage accessories monthly. Rocks, roots and any other item in your iguana enclosure should be thoroughly disinfected at least once a month. Use a solution that contains on part bleach and four parts water. Be sure to thoroughly dry all accessories before returning them to your monitor cage or iguana enclosures.
4. Feed your reptile a variety of insects. Varity ensures your pet is receiving all the nutrients he needs to thrive. While you do not have to fill your iguana enclosure with insects during feeding time, be sure to provide your pet with an adequate supply of food.
